Zip-lines, jungle treks, and bomb threats- Oh my!

Hello from Malaysia! Things here are going well. The days seem to be passing by pretty quickly, and with each passing day we are feeling more and more at home. We have been keeping pretty busy! Between work and weekend fun, we barely have time for sleep! I will say that we have had some rough days lately and have had a good dose of homesickness. We miss our family and friends and all the laughing we used to do with them. We also really miss Dulles (insert the "Cheers" theme song here). Our school here in Malaysia is good, but it is taking some getting used to.
This past week has been a pretty exciting one. We did our first zip-line (something I have always wanted to do). We went out with our "newbie" group (all the other teachers who are new to the school this year) and zip-lined from the KL Tower. It was pretty cool. Doing it made us even more excited about the amazing jungle zip-line we are going to do in Thailand over Christmas.
On our way to the zip-line, we stumbled upon a city jungle trek. Imagine Central Park, but if New York was in the jungle. It is smack dab in the middle of the city and you wouldn't even know it is there unless you (like us) happen to accidentally stumble upon it. It is part of KL's conservation act to preserve the rainforest/jungle terrain in the midst of the skyscrapers and malls of downtown. Overall, it was pretty awesome- but MAN- it was quite the workout!!! When you aren't expecting to hike through the mountains of the jungle, and in turn aren't very prepared, you would be amazed how much you can sweat! And, with out the forethought of repellent, you will quickly find out just how many mosquitoes are in the jungle! YIKES! I thought Texas was full of mosquitoes.
The last exciting part of our week was (yes- you read it correctly) bomb threats! Billy's campus (grades 6-12) had 2 bomb threats last week. Both were full on, evacuate the school, sweep the campus, and in one case- not returning to the campus. No, this was not related to Sept. 11th or anything. After evaluations by both the school and the Malaysian police/government, we have been told that we are not in any danger. There are thoughts that this could be the work of someone trying to pull a hoax. But, we are a school with some children of very important people (ambassadors, prime ministers, CEOs, etc.), so it is not being taken lightly. We are just crossing our fingers that this week will be a little less "exciting" at school. It is tough trying to teach when you keep being interrupted by pesky bomb threats! :)
Well- that's it for now. We are gearing up for our first trip. We leave for Cambodia in 3 days!!! Woo hoo! More on that to come, I am sure. If you are reading, just know that we miss you and think about all of you at home often. Lots-o-love!!!!!!!!

  • Hi Billy & Jaime! I just wanted to say "hi" and tell you that I LOVE reading your blog. It looks like you guys are truly having an adventure, and I'll have to say I'm jealous. ;) Keep up the great posts! Something I'm interested in hearing more about is what you guys eat on a daily basis (I love food!). Are there sloppy joe's in the school cafeteria? hehe!

  • Mmmmm... I miss Jaime-Mary days. If there were a Jaime-Mary day in Malaysia, we'd definitely have to zip line and jungle trek and then take a bus somewhere... maybe a Malaysian bus barn. Have fun in Cambodia and be safe!
